Well, yesterday’s gun buyback in L.A. was the most successful ever – they even got another rocket launcher off the streets. And 166 firearms were turned in for nothing in exchange.
But remember, if NRA leaders had their way, more guns would be the answer. I’m afraid to ask them about rocket launchers.
In what seems like a long overdue move, the United Kingdom has passed a law allowing convictions for consensual gay sex to be stricken from the records of “guilty” parties.
The U.K.’s antisodomy laws banned gay sex for years, with some of these laws not being repealed until 2003. But now, finally, men who were convicted of having consensual gay sex can have this particular offense removed from their records.
“It’s estimated that over the last century in the region of 100,000 men in the U.K. were convicted of consenting same-sex offences that were not crimes between heterosexual men and women,” activist Peter Tatchell told Pink News. “Many had their lives ruined, including serving prison sentences, losing their jobs and suffering rejection by their families.
I suppose this is good news, but I’m still kind of shocked this has to be news at all. I mean, really? It took this long?
Stand in Solidarity with Monica Taylor
Monica Taylor needs your help. In her own words she has been on a life long “fist fight with the medical system” and now faces criminal charges for an act she did not commit.
For years now, Monica has been dealing with a slowly progressive neurological condition called Ataxia. This condition, unfortunately, was not diagnosed until recently. 5 years ago, Monica was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia. This past summer Monica’s current psychiatrist and Monica herself discovered that she does not in fact suffer from a psychological condition, but a neurological one.
In order to get a proper diagnosis, Monica’s primary care doctor referred Monica to OHSU for an MRI and EEG. What happened next is beyond appalling. The neurologist on site refused Monica an MRI and EEG. Monica, understandably upset, advocated for herself and demanded to be seen. They told her that if she didn’t leave they would call security. Monica immediately called her primary care doctor to get another referral. A security guard came, threatened her, slammed Monica to the ground and tasered her 8 times. She was then sent to jail and now faces several charges, including assault.
In the past six months Monica’s symptoms have begun to rapidly progress. She has been experiencing frequent seizures, throat and stomach spasms (that have made it nearly impossible to eat), rapid weight loss and loss of balance among other things. Her situation is dire and she needs her community to support her.
Monica Taylor has faced more injustice than most people could ever handle: severe misdiagnosis, unnecessary and potentially harmful blockages to her health care, bureaucracy, mistreatment and outright abuse from the medical care system. Now she faces possible jail time.
We urge you to PLEASE donate to help Monica on her road to recovery. She is trying to gain her strength and weight back, in addition to getting ready for her upcoming trial on November 9th. Any amount you can donate would be appreciated. All proceeds go to Monica directly and will be used for her self-care process.
Monica is a fighter, an inspiration and a vital member of our community. Please stand in solidarity with her.
Please donate to her chipin here: http://monicataylor.chipin.com/monica-taylor
If you cannot donate, I ask from my heart that you help my friend by posting this far and wide. xo
Cristian Fernandez is only 12 years old. And if Florida prosecutor Angela Corey has her way, he’ll never leave jail again.
Cristian hasn’t had an easy life. He’s the same age now as his mother was when he was born. He’s a survivor of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. In 2010, Cristian watched his stepfather commit suicide to avoid being charged with abusing Cristian.
Last January, Cristian was wrestling with his 2-year-old brother, David, and accidentally broke David’s leg. Despite this, their mother left Cristian with his brother again in March. While the two boys were alone, Cristian allegedly pushed his brother against a bookcase, and David sustained a head injury. After their mother returned home, she waited six hours before taking David to the hospital. David eventually died.
Now Cristian is being charged with first degree murder — as an adult. He’s the youngest person in the history of his Florida county to receive this charge, and his next hearing is scheduled for tomorrow.

Modern day lynching
Texas just passed similar legislation which allows police officers to question a person’s [translation: Latino’s] citizenship status. A friend of mine said it was not that drastic, and that people [translation: Latinos] were overreacting. He said everyone just needs to sit back and wait for the economy to recover for immigrants will be treated better; and political pressure never works. I said that the Latinos reaction is not because it is so much drastic, but rather, it is because the legislation is an ethnically-targeted political show (it’s all a game to get votes and support) that is a step down a path that is not good for Latinos. I also said that such laws will set a tone that people will follow. Most people are followers by nature. If certain policies are put into place, certain people will be obedient followers and carry out what they think the spirit of such ideas are. In the process, certain people of a certain targeted group bear the pain and suffering. It seems little but, there is still a negative perception and attitude towards certain people in such legislation. All actions are based on thoughts and emotions. Negative thoughts and emotions can bring negative actions. There are countless examples in Arizona. This case happened in Georgia. Luckily, this guy was caught. How many times has this happened and gone unreported out of fear of being deported?
The legislation in Texas has NOT passed yet- only the Senate. Will be up for a House vote Monday, June 26th(tmr).
Another cop rapist?
You know what…..
"Over the past ten years of occupation, Afghanistan’s boom in the opium trade, used to produce heroin, has funneled hundreds of millions of dollars to the Taliban, al-Qaida, local warlords, criminal gangs, kidnappers, private armies, drug traffickers, and many of the senior figures in the government of President Hamid Karzai. The New York Times reported that Ahmed Wali Karzai, brother of President Karzai, was collecting money from the CIA although he is a major player in the illegal opium business. Afghanistan produces nintey-two percent of the world’s opium in a trade worth some $65 billion, the United Nations estimates. This opium feeds some fifteen million addicts worldwide and kills around one hundred thousand people annually. These fatalities should be added to the lists of war dead."
Another little girl playing princess. No knock on girls who dress like Disney princesses, but I’d like to see more of this outfit.
